The Egyptian government, represented by the General Authority for Healthcare, is providing distinguished medical services. Among Aswan’s healthcare pillars is the Al-Aweinah Family Health Unit in Edfu, which offers prompt and adequate treatment services to Aswan citizens under the directives of the political and governmental leadership to elevate the healthcare system within the comprehensive health insurance framework.
The unit is housed in a three-story building and includes family planning services, referrals, pregnancy and child follow-up, emergency clinics, a dental clinic offering extraction, fillings, and X-rays, as well as blood and vaccination laboratories and a pharmacy serving the residents of Al-Aweinah village.
The unit’s medical, nursing, technical, and administrative teams provide services in family medicine, dentistry, emergency reception, family planning, and vaccinations, supported by a pharmacy and laboratory services.
The Aswan branch of the General Authority for Healthcare monitors the medical services across all unit departments, ensuring quality and efficiency, reviewing daily case records to verify accurate medical documentation and safe patient procedures, and continuously enhancing medical facility readiness to meet beneficiaries’ needs within the comprehensive health insurance system.
The branch also supervises the performance of medical and administrative staff, ensuring adherence to approved standards, inspecting the emergency room, family medicine clinic, and pharmacy, monitoring daily attendance rates, and reviewing patient data registration to reflect accurate and disciplined medical service delivery. Beneficiaries’ feedback is collected to ensure easy access to medical services, with continuous follow-up for chronic disease patients to guarantee regular and appropriate medication availability. Additionally, preparations are underway to activate the electronic system at the center to improve service efficiency and expedite procedures.
Leadership also monitors the regularity of medical services, especially during evening hours, overseeing the emergency and reception departments’ readiness to handle urgent cases 24/7, ensuring rapid response and quality care, supervising sterilization and general cleanliness, and enforcing infection control protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff. The family medicine clinic’s service delivery approach and attendance rates are also reviewed, alongside the dental clinic’s operation and adherence to medical standards to achieve optimal treatment outcomes.
The General Authority for Healthcare has provided 2.8 million medical and therapeutic services to beneficiaries in Aswan during the trial operation period. These services covered all levels of healthcare, from comprehensive medical examinations and accurate diagnosis to medication dispensing and advanced therapeutic interventions, including major surgeries, ensuring readiness to deliver quality and efficient care.
Services included over one million medical and laboratory tests, 400,000 emergency services, 100,000 outpatient clinic visits, and 20,000 surgeries, with more than 45% being major, advanced, and highly skilled operations, in addition to intensive care, incubators, and other advanced services.
These services have been provided through 8 hospitals and 89 family health centers and units across Aswan, all equipped with the latest capabilities to meet citizens’ health needs in all specialties, within an expanding system currently completing the preparation and operation of additional facilities planned to join the system officially.
To date, 97 health facilities have been operated in Aswan, including 8 hospitals: Aswan Specialized Hospital, Specialized Ophthalmology Hospital, Obelisk Specialized Hospital, Abu Simbel International Hospital, Aswan Cancer Center, Kom Ombo Central Hospital, Daraw Central Hospital, and Nile Specialized Hospital, alongside 89 family health centers and units. The target is to reach 123 health facilities, including 11 hospitals and 121 family health centers and units, all prepared to the highest technical standards to ensure safe, high-quality healthcare services.
The Authority’s health facilities in Aswan provide healthcare services at all levels (primary, secondary, tertiary), including comprehensive medical examinations, radiology, laboratory tests, outpatient clinics, emergency services, and precise and advanced surgeries, including major and skilled surgical interventions.
Twenty-two new and advanced medical services and specialties have been introduced for the first time within the Authority’s system and health facilities in Aswan. These services aim to enhance medical service efficiency, activate the latest treatment protocols, and eliminate the need for patients to travel outside the governorate or country for treatment, providing integrated and advanced healthcare close to their residence.
The official operation of the system in Aswan completes the implementation of the first phase of the comprehensive health insurance system across several governorates, including Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and finally Aswan.
