The Colombian national team caused a major upset at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile by defeating Spain 3-2 at Talca Stadium in the quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals while Spain was eliminated from the tournament.
Colombian striker Neisser Villarreal scored a hat-trick (38′, 64′, 89′), while Spain’s Jan Vergili (56′) and Ryan Bleyed (59′) scored the two goals for Spain.
The first half was balanced, with Colombia taking the lead through Villarreal who finished a well-organized attack led by Oscar Peria and Jordan Barrera (38′). Spain came back strongly in the second half, with Jan Vergili equalizing from a precise cross by Jesus Fortia (56′), followed by Ryan Bleyed’s powerful shot for the second goal (59′).
Colombia responded quickly when Villarreal scored the equalizer after a brilliant pass from John Renteria, marking his second goal of the match (64′). The match intensified in the final minutes, and at the 89th minute, Villarreal capitalized on a Spanish defensive error, broke through the goalkeeper, and scored his third goal, sealing a historic qualification for his country.
With this result, Colombia reached the U-20 World Cup semifinals for the first time in its history, while Spain exited the tournament in a surprising upset.
