Riyad Mahrez, captain of the Algerian national team, revealed the ambitions of the “Desert Warriors” for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, affirming that the team aims to reach the final despite disappointments in the last two editions.

The “Greens” compete in Group E alongside Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea. Mahrez told Canal+ channel: “Our goal is clear, we aspire to reach the final.”

He added: “Morocco is the top favorite to win the title, given the hosting and fan support, which increases the pressure on them. As for us, we prefer to work away from the spotlight and without the pressure of predictions.”

The former Manchester City star spoke about dual-nationality players, saying: “The choice must come from an inner conviction, not out of interest. Whoever feels Algerian should come and defend the national colors, and it is better for the player to decide early in their career.”

Mahrez also emphasized that belonging to African football does not reduce chances of success: “We have proven that playing for an African national team does not prevent you from shining in the biggest global clubs.”

He concluded his statements by comparing generations: “Our generation joined the national team with humility and respect for the elders, while the current generation shows some arrogance, but it could turn into a positive motivation if properly harnessed.”
