Elon Musk announced that his AI startup, X.AI, has released the source code for its previous AI model “Grok 2.5” for free to any developer or researcher, with the newer version “Grok 3” expected to be released the same way in about six months. Musk explained on his social platform X that the model is now available on Hugging Face, a popular platform for sharing open-source AI models. This comes after “Grok” sparked widespread controversy earlier this year, especially after the chatbot appeared influenced by conspiracy theories and expressed doubts about the Holocaust victim count, according to TechCrunch. Despite this, the model was licensed under a special agreement described as limiting competition, reflecting Musk’s attempt to balance transparency by making models available to researchers and developers while imposing restrictions to protect his company from competitors.
