A man named Michael Prince claimed he was severely assaulted by employees of the “Dino Grocery Store” in Winnipeg, the largest city in the Canadian province of Manitoba, after attempting to steal a car.
The man filed a lawsuit against the store, owner Rajan Pharma, and eight other employees.
According to the lawsuit statement submitted to the King’s Bench Court in Manitoba on August 12, Prince (36 years old) alleged that the employees used excessive force during his arrest, exceeding what is necessary to detain a citizen or hold him until the police arrived.
The incident dates back to February 24, 2024, when Prince stole a jacket containing a wallet and car key from the store, then returned half an hour later to steal the car linked to the key. However, his attempt failed due to the car alarm being triggered, as the vehicle was surrounded by other cars.
Prince claims the employees pulled him out of the car and repeatedly punched and kicked him, also hitting his head with a hammer causing bleeding. After fleeing the scene, the attackers followed the blood trail in the snow until they reached his home.
Prince’s brother then called emergency services, and he was taken to the Health Sciences Center where he received treatment for 24 hours. After discharge, he was arrested by Winnipeg police and detained at the Headingly Correctional Centre for nearly a month before being questioned.
Prince claims the assault caused him serious injuries including skull fractures, concussion, nerve damage, dizziness, brain swelling, post-traumatic stress disorder, and permanent hearing and vision impairment. He confirmed these injuries prevent him from finding work.
The allegations have not yet been adjudicated in court, and the defendants have not submitted any defense documents.
