On Tuesday, Meta launched a new update to Facebook’s algorithm aimed at making video watching experiences more personalized and controllable for users, while increasing the visibility of Reels tailored to individual preferences.

New AI-Powered Control Tools

The update includes features that give users greater ability to manage what they watch, along with AI-powered smart search suggestions and new friend bubbles, according to The Telegraph.

Smart Search Suggestions Similar to TikTok

Reels will be equipped with automated search suggestions to help users discover more content related to their favorite topics, similar to the gray suggestions that appear at the end of TikTok videos.

“Not Interested”: Facebook Responds to User Complaints

Users can now easily express disinterest in certain types of videos by selecting the “Not Interested” option or reporting annoying comments. The recommendation system will adjust what it shows based on this feedback, giving users more control over content.

Updated “Save” Feature to Collect Favorite Clips

The “Save” feature has been improved to allow users to gather favorite Reels and posts in one place for easier access later.

Addressing Quality Decline and Misinformation

The update comes amid increasing user complaints about annoying, misleading, or low-quality AI-generated videos. Meta believes this improvement can help restore user trust and enhance overall browsing experience.

“Vibes”: A New AI Video Experience

As part of its massive AI investments, Meta recently launched a new short video service called “Vibes,” which features only AI-generated content through the Meta AI app.

“Friend Bubbles” to Show Close Interactions

One of the key additions is the new “Friend Bubbles” appearing on the Reels page and home page, where users can see posts liked by their friends. Tapping a bubble with a friend’s picture opens a private chat directly, similar to a feature on Instagram.

The new algorithm aims to prioritize newer videos. The company stated users will now see a 50% increase in the number of Reels posted on the same day they browse the app.
