Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Thursday that he has joined the American tech giant Microsoft and the emerging AI company Anthropic as a senior advisor.
Sunak, who stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party after his defeat in the July general election, continues to serve as a member of the UK Parliament.
In a LinkedIn post, Sunak stated that all proceeds from these roles will be donated entirely to “The Richmond Project,” a charity he founded with his wife Akshata Murty, according to Reuters.
Anthropic, backed by Amazon and Google, said the advisory role, which focuses on internal work, is part-time and fully compliant with the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) rules that oversee appointments of former ministers and senior government officials to new jobs.
Sunak will advise Anthropic on macroeconomic and geopolitical strategies and trends.
The role focuses on global strategic aspects rather than UK-specific policies, and Sunak is prohibited from communicating with UK government officials on behalf of Anthropic.
At Microsoft, Sunak will provide strategic insights on macroeconomic and geopolitical trends. He is also scheduled to speak at Microsoft’s annual summit, according to an advisory letter from Isabel Doverty, interim chair of ACOBA, published on the committee’s website on Thursday.
Sunak will not provide any advice on UK political matters at Microsoft.
This development follows Sunak’s return to Goldman Sachs in July as an advisor. He previously worked as an analyst at the Wall Street bank in the early 2000s before joining a series of hedge funds.
