A senior informed source from the Ministry of Industry and Trade told Hespress electronic newspaper in a special briefing that “Morocco received an offer from economic partners to participate in the ‘Future Investment and Trade Partnership’ initiative, a new coalition expected to bring together member countries of the World Trade Organization,” adding that the ministry “principally sees this initiative as an opportunity to attract investments and is not against any party.”
The official source, responding to a question about recent media reports discussing Morocco’s expected joining along with other countries to the 10 founding countries of the coalition, which aims to support global trade openness in response to the tariff policies of President Donald Trump, said, “The Kingdom was indeed offered by its partners to join this initiative.”
The Hespress source added that “Morocco is working within this framework with several of the country’s economic partners to strengthen partnership, exchanges, and investment, and is not against any party.” When asked specifically if the initiative is related to the tariffs imposed by the United States under Trump on several countries, he replied: “It has nothing to do with that matter at all.”
The senior source stated: “The Ministry of Industry and Trade sees this initiative as an opportunity for Morocco to attract investments and strengthen job creation.”
The British newspaper Financial Times reported that a new coalition is being sought by ten WTO member countries to launch, aiming to enhance trade openness in the face of customs measures taken by U.S. President Donald Trump. It mentioned that Morocco, Rwanda, Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Panama, Norway, and Malaysia are expected to join the new bloc.
The newspaper explained in a report published on Friday, August 29, citing diplomatic and informed officials from Asia and Latin America, that the new group will be called the “Future Investment and Trade Partnership,” abbreviated as “FIT-P.”
The same source revealed that the partnership is scheduled to be launched during a remote meeting next November, followed by an in-person meeting in July 2026. The British newspaper quoted one official involved in discussions about the initiative saying, “The initial idea is to maintain a flexible alliance to promote trade openness and international trade rules.”
The same official did not rule out that the initiative “could evolve into something more significant over time,” adding: “This is a work in progress.”
This new global development comes amid the United States, under President Donald Trump, imposing tariffs on several countries worldwide, which reached 10 percent in Morocco’s case.
