The UK government announced today (Monday) sanctions on dozens of individuals and entities linked to Iran, following similar measures taken by the United Nations and the European Union.

The UK Treasury said in a statement that several individuals and entities connected to Iran’s nuclear program, including the Iranian Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Oil, were added to the sanctions list. It clarified that sanctions were imposed on 9 individuals and 62 entities as part of its anti-Iran measures. The sanctions include freezing the funds and economic resources of those involved or previously involved in the proliferation or development of nuclear weapons in Iran or their use, or any activity that could lead to the development or use of nuclear weapons in Iran. Those subject to UK sanctions will face asset freezes, financial restrictions, and travel bans.

Earlier today, the UK, Germany, and France—the European troika—issued a joint statement urging Iran not to take any escalatory actions and to continue complying with its commitments, emphasizing their primary goal of preventing Tehran from seeking to acquire or develop nuclear weapons. The three countries called on Tehran and all nations to fully comply with UN resolutions, accusing Iran of repeatedly violating its commitments and stating they had no choice but to activate the snapback mechanism. They will continue to pursue diplomacy and negotiations with Iran.

The UK, France, and Germany have initiated a process to reimpose sanctions on Iran at the UN Security Council for violating the 2015 agreement aimed at preventing Tehran from making a nuclear bomb, while Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.
