The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has imposed financial fines on six national football associations, including Argentina, due to racist abuses by their fans during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
The six countries accused of “discrimination and racist abuse” are Albania, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to a sanctions list published by FIFA’s disciplinary committee, which did not provide details on the individual cases.
The Albanian Football Federation received the largest fine of $200,000 due to a series of offenses during a home match against Serbia on June 7, which included disruption of the opposing team’s national anthem and conveying an “inappropriate message for a sporting event.”
Historical political tensions between Albania and Serbia often cast a shadow over their football matches.
The two teams drew 0-0 in the Albanian capital Tirana in June, with the return match scheduled to take place in the Serbian capital Belgrade on October 11.
FIFA fined the Argentine national team $149,000 for a single charge related to discrimination or racist abuse during their match against Colombia on June 10 in Buenos Aires.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw and saw Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández sent off for a dangerous tackle; FIFA suspended him for two matches and fined him about $6,000.
Chile’s Football Federation was fined $143,000 due to racist behavior by fans during their 1-0 home loss to Argentina on June 5, while Colombia was fined $87,000 after hosting Peru on June 6.
Serbia must pay $62,000 for racism and other incidents during their June 10 match against Andorra, and Bosnia and Herzegovina was fined $26,000 for racism during their home match against San Marino.
In most cases, FIFA ordered the member associations to implement “preventive plans” for future matches.
The fines, reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, demonstrate FIFA’s renewed strictness against racism and discrimination since its global call at last year’s annual general meeting for football bodies to take action.
