Warnings continue worldwide about unstable weather caused by unprecedented climate changes with limitless consequences. From fires, typhoons, floods to deadly heatwaves, the planet holds its breath.
On Monday, people in Vietnam woke up to the terror of an approaching typhoon. Vietnamese authorities ordered the evacuation of more than 586,000 people from central coastal areas in anticipation of Typhoon Kajiki, expected to hit the eastern coast Monday morning. This comes amid warnings of heavy rains, floods, and landslides.
Vietnamese authorities announced evacuation plans as Kajiki was about 500 km from the central coast on Sunday morning, moving west at 20 km/h with winds reaching 166 km/h.
In Arab countries, climate change risks are similarly severe. Tunisia faced its fiercest wave of forest fires this summer, destroying thousands of hectares of vegetation without human casualties. The National Civil Protection Office recorded 134 fires affecting about 2,194 hectares, with firefighting efforts ongoing.
In Algeria, meteorological services warned of a “record heatwave” affecting provinces including Boumerdes, Annaba, Skikda, and Bejaia. They also issued alerts for heavy thunderstorms and rains in multiple provinces.
The Algerian Ministry of Health urged special care for children, elderly, and chronically ill during the heatwave, recommending closing windows and curtains on sun-facing sides and avoiding going out during peak heat.
Saudi Arabia’s National Meteorological Center issued early warnings for eight regions amid severe climate fluctuations including heavy rains, active winds, heatwaves, and thunderstorms, with effects expected to continue into the evening.
Heavy thunderstorms causing flash floods, hail, and dust storms were forecast in parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, Medina, Mecca, and Najran. Weather warnings covered multiple provinces with expected impacts lasting until late night. Wind speeds on the Red Sea vary between 15-50 km/h with moderate to rough sea conditions and thunderstorm clouds developing in southern and central parts.
