Omar Mohamed Sultan was born in Minya in 1882. His father, Mohamed Sultan Pasha, was among the first generation of Egyptian politicians and served as the President of the Shura Council in 1881 during the reign of Khedive Tawfiq. He held this position until March 1882 and then again from November 1883 to August 1884. Mohamed Sultan Pasha owned over 13,000 feddans and many palaces in Minya, Cairo, and Alexandria.
Omar Sultan grew up in a privileged environment and inherited a prominent family name. In his youth, he focused on managing his vast wealth and sought to improve his father’s reputation, which had been tarnished due to his coup against the Arab leaders and alliance with Khedive Tawfiq. Omar joined the leader Mustafa Kamel and generously funded his anti-occupation activities. He was elected a member of the administrative committee of the National Party at its founding in 1907 and served as its treasurer. After Mustafa Kamel’s death, Omar shifted his loyalty to Khedive Abbas Helmy II, who granted him the rank of Pasha.
He was a member of the Agricultural Society, founded by Prince Hussein Kamel before he became Sultan, which later became the Ministry of Agriculture. Through this society, Omar contributed to many projects to develop agriculture in the Minya governorate and introduced modern farming methods.
Omar was also a member of the Islamic Charity Society in Minya, where he demonstrated exceptional competence and wise judgment. He generously supported many charitable projects benefiting the Minya region.
He established a museum in his Cairo home, collecting many precious artifacts dating back to the eras of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and the Muhammad Ali dynasty. This museum was a destination for art and history enthusiasts.
Omar Sultan was also keen on breeding and improving Arabian horses, owning many in Egypt and Minya. He actively organized horse races in Minya, inviting dignitaries from Cairo and other cities and villages.
In sports, Omar was a member of the Egyptian Olympic Committee from 1910 until 1917. He was also one of the founders of the Egyptian Al Ahly Club and a major contributor to its establishment. He was the first to guarantee the club’s loan of 2000 Egyptian pounds from the National Bank and was elected to the club’s supreme committee (board of directors) in 1916.
Omar Sultan Pasha died on February 21, 1917, at the young age of 35, leaving behind two young children, a daughter and a son. He was buried in the area now known as Zawyet Sultan, located on the eastern bank of the Nile opposite Minya city, in the family cemetery that includes his wife, his aunt Naela Hanem Sultan (mother of actor Gamil Ratib), and his sister Nour El-Huda Mohamed Sultan, known as Huda Shaarawi, a pioneer of the women’s movement, who was married to the revolutionary Ali Shaarawi Pasha, a member of the Egyptian delegation with leader Saad Zaghloul Pasha.
