FIFA has fined the Iraqi Football Federation $40,000 due to fans invading the pitch in Basra during the Iraq vs. South Korea match in the final round of World Cup qualifiers. Additionally, FIFA suspended Iraqi national team player Ali Al-Hammadi for two consecutive matches for dangerous play involving striking a South Korean player.

Al-Hammadi missed the recent match against Jordan in the World Cup qualifiers and will also miss the upcoming match against Indonesia in the Asian playoff. This is the third penalty imposed on the Iraqi Football Federation during the World Cup qualifiers in Basra. Previously, FIFA fined the federation 2,000 Swiss francs after the national team’s match against Kuwait due to fan misconduct. The decision also fined the Kuwaiti Football Federation 5,000 Swiss francs, suspended Nicolas Antonio Pizzi, the coach’s son, for one match with a similar fine, and suspended goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli for three matches with a 5,000 Swiss franc fine.
