Liverpool clinched a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Newcastle in the second round of the English Premier League on Monday. Amid tense atmosphere due to the Swedish striker Alexander Isak’s desire to transfer to Liverpool and the exchanged statements before the match, Liverpool took the lead in the 35th minute through Ryan Gravenberch. Early in the second half, Hugo Ekitike scored Liverpool’s second goal taking advantage of Newcastle’s numerical disadvantage after Anthony Gordon was sent off in stoppage time of the first half. Newcastle’s captain Bruno Guimarães scored in the 57th minute to reduce the deficit, and William Osula equalized in the 88th minute. Just as the match seemed headed for a draw, substitute 16-year-old Rio Ngumouha scored the winning goal in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time.
Liverpool now has 6 points in third place, just behind leaders Arsenal and second-placed Tottenham on goal difference, while Newcastle remains 15th with 1 point after a goalless draw in the first round against Aston Villa.
