American Madison Keys, seeded sixth and 2017 finalist, was eliminated in the first round of the US Open after a thrilling loss to Mexican Renata Zarazua, ranked 82nd in the world, with scores of 7-6 (12-10), 6-7 (3-7), 5-7 on Monday. This marks Keys’ first first-round exit in a Grand Slam since 2021, when she lost at the same tournament to fellow American Sloane Stephens. Zarazua reached the second round of a Grand Slam for only the third time in her career. The match was intense, with multiple service breaks and two tiebreaks in the first two sets. Canadian Victoria Mboko, 18 and seeded 22nd, who recently won the Cincinnati 1000 tournament, was also eliminated in the first round by Czech Barbora Krejčíková. Krejčíková, a two-time Grand Slam champion, will face Japanese Moyuka Uchijima next. Petra Kvitová, two-time Wimbledon champion, suffered a heavy first-round defeat to French player Diane Parry.
Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion and ninth seed, advanced easily to the second round.
