The platforms X and X.AI, owned by Elon Musk, have filed a complaint in a federal court in Texas accusing Apple and OpenAI of forming an illegal alliance to disrupt competition in the generative AI market for smartphones. The complaint states that Apple, the manufacturer of iPhones, and OpenAI, developer of the ChatGPT robot, agreed to integrate the AI assistant into iPhones while blocking competing systems like Grok from X.AI. The complaint highlights that Apple controls 65% of the U.S. smartphone market, and OpenAI holds at least 80% of the generative AI assistant market thanks to ChatGPT. This agreement grants ChatGPT exclusive access to billions of user queries from hundreds of millions of devices. Elon Musk also accuses Apple of manipulating the App Store rankings to favor ChatGPT and delaying approval of Grok’s app updates.
Musk’s companies are seeking billions in damages and an official ban on these anti-competitive practices, calling for a jury trial. Apple has not commented yet, while OpenAI described the complaint as typical harassment behavior by Mr. Musk.
