Elon Musk, owner of the platforms ‘X’ and the startup ‘X AI’, has accused Apple and OpenAI of forming an illegal alliance to undermine competition in the generative AI market for smartphones. In a complaint filed Monday in a federal court in Texas, Musk stated that Apple, the maker of iPhones, and OpenAI, developer of the ChatGPT robot, agreed to integrate the AI assistant into iPhones while blocking competing systems like ‘Grok’ from X AI. The complaint describes this as a story of two monopolistic companies joining forces to strengthen their dominance over a world driven by the most powerful technology developed by humanity: artificial intelligence. Apple holds 65% of the US smartphone market, while OpenAI monopolizes at least 80% of the generative AI assistant systems market thanks to ChatGPT. This agreement grants ChatGPT exclusive access to billions of user queries from hundreds of millions of devices.
Musk also accuses Apple of manipulating the App Store rankings to favor ChatGPT and delaying approval of updates to the Grok app. Musk’s companies are seeking billions of dollars in damages and an official ban on these anti-competitive practices, calling for a trial by jury. Apple has not yet commented on the complaint, while an OpenAI spokesperson described it as typical of Mr. Musk’s harassing behavior.
