Since the announcement of Bassirou Diomey Faye as President of Senegal in April 2024, sharp disagreements have emerged between him and Ousmane Sonko, his political ally, revealing the fragility of their friendship and joint struggle and threatening the country’s democratic transition. Faye did not come from the traditional elite but from a youthful, angry movement born out of political and social protests between 2021 and 2023. Sonko, a symbol of resistance and change, was the driving force behind Faye’s rise. However, power has exposed the fragility of their relationship, with conflicts arising over authority and leadership legitimacy. This crisis reflects a clash between electoral legitimacy held by Faye and popular support enjoyed by Sonko, raising questions about the effectiveness of political alliances based on personal charisma rather than clear programs. Senegal’s democracy faces a real test in managing political disagreements through peaceful and institutional means.
