The American film “Ballerina”, starring Cuban actress Ana de Armas, caused heavy financial losses exceeding 94 million euros for the production company Lionsgate after failing to generate revenues covering its production and marketing costs since its release in June. Despite a production cost of about 90 million dollars and a large marketing budget, its global revenue stopped at only 132 million dollars, considered a clear commercial failure, especially as it could not compete against blockbuster films released in the same period. On its opening day, the film earned only 24 million dollars, placing second after the animated film “Lilo and Stitch”, before quickly declining with the release of strong films such as “Mission Impossible 8”, “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Jurassic World: Rebirth” which has earned over 800 million dollars so far, and the Brad Pitt-starring “F1” film which grossed over 580 million dollars.

“Ballerina” belongs to the world of the famous John Wick series and its events take place between the third and fourth parts of the series, focusing on the character Eva who becomes a professional assassin seeking revenge on her family’s killers, intersecting with the professional killer John Wick. Despite its commercial failure, the film was well received by critics and audiences, scoring 76% from critics and 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for Ana de Armas’s performance and the narrative connection to the John Wick universe, despite criticism for continuing the same violent approach.
