The Pan American Health Organization announced a significant increase in measles cases in the Americas, especially in North America, with rising deaths due to infection in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The UN-affiliated organization stated that the outbreak is linked to decreased vaccination coverage, with 71% of cases among unvaccinated individuals and 18% among those with unknown vaccination status. By August 8, 2024, 10,139 measles cases and 18 related deaths were confirmed across 10 countries in the Americas, representing a 34-fold increase compared to the same period in 2023. Among the deaths, 14 were recorded in Mexico, three in the United States, and one in Canada. Most deaths in Mexico occurred among indigenous populations.
