Elon Musk made a bold claim about the AI platform “Grok”. In a post on platform X, the billionaire said: “The goal of ‘Grok Imagine’ is to give users superpowers of imagination.” This statement comes as Musk’s AI company X.AI recently expanded access to the “Grok Imagine” feature, initially available only on iOS, now free for Android users for a limited time. “Grok Imagine” allows users to create AI-generated images and short videos using simple written or spoken commands. Users can also upload existing images and customize them with AI tools. Over 44 million images have already been created using this feature, and the number continues to grow. The app is designed for ease of use; after downloading “Grok” from the app store or Google Play, users can select “Imagine” from the top menu, enter a text command, or upload an image.
Within seconds, the system produces an image that can be turned into short videos by clicking “Create Video.” The video feature offers four modes: normal, fun, custom, and the most controversial “hot” mode. Despite attracting attention for allowing partial nudity and explicit sexual content, there are restrictions on its use. Attempts to create more extreme or political content, such as Donald Trump holding a baby, are blocked, with the system producing toned-down alternatives instead. Despite these limits, Grok Imagine has established itself as a competitor to other AI image and video generators. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini already offer similar features, but Musk’s tool aims to stand out with speed, ease of use, and interactivity. The promise of free access, even temporarily, adds to its appeal. However, early reviews indicate the results are not perfect.
Human-like images often fall into the “uncanny” category, with strange textures or cartoon-like skin tones. But the generator has been praised for its quick response, ability to produce endless variations, and smooth user interface. Musk, known for his ambitious visions, stated the tool will improve rapidly, promising in a previous post: “It will get better day by day.” For now, Grok Imagine is likely to continue attracting attention, not only for its creative potential but also for the debates it raises about the boundaries of AI-generated content.
