US President Donald Trump received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House and held a meeting where Zelensky presented what he believes is his vision for a solution. Trump told reporters they will hold an important meeting with Zelensky and European leaders, aiming for a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. He indicated that Putin and Zelensky want to end the war but refused to disclose details about US security guarantees for Ukraine, saying he will discuss them with Europeans. Trump added, “We have not discussed security guarantees with Putin, but we will today,” noting he could reach an agreement to freeze fighting in Ukraine. He expressed his desire for prosperity for the Ukrainian people and expects positive outcomes from the meeting. Trump emphasized that the US will be involved in Ukraine’s future security and will work with Ukraine and others to ensure lasting peace.

Defending Putin’s visit to Washington, Trump said, “Putin coming to America is not a defeat for him,” and renewed his desire for a trilateral summit with Putin and Zelensky if all goes well. He stated he would work with Russia and Ukraine and that there would be much support regarding security and lasting peace. Trump added, “I would not have allowed the war in Ukraine to break out if I were president,” and said peace will always prevail and the world will be happy with it. He concluded by saying, “Ukraine will not be in NATO.” Zelensky, for his part, thanked Trump for his efforts to end the war, noting that Russia continues its attacks. He expressed hope for a diplomatic solution and readiness to participate in a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin. Zelensky stressed the importance of providing security guarantees to prevent the war from reigniting.
