Al Hilal Saudi Club announced the completion of the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, coming from Liverpool for 53 million euros, with a contract extending for three years. This deal ranks as one of Liverpool’s biggest sales, with Nunez occupying the sixth position in the club’s highest sales list.
Despite Nunez’s impressive performance during the preparation period with Liverpool, scoring five goals in four matches, his overall level fluctuated since his transfer to Anfield from Benfica for 85 million euros in 2022. During his career with the Reds, Nunez participated in 143 matches, scoring 40 goals and assisting 26, but he has now played his last match with the team.
Despite his technical ups and downs, Nunez retains a special place among Liverpool fans and teammates, and the club managed to recover a large part of its investment through this deal.
Nunez’s transfer comes at a time when Liverpool is strengthening its investment power in the summer transfer market, having spent 308 million euros to enhance its squad by signing players such as Jeremy Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike. Meanwhile, the Reds succeeded in recovering 196 million euros from selling their players.
The deal amount is expected to rise to 65 million euros with potential additional clauses, making it among the top four biggest sales in the club’s history, surpassing Raheem Sterling’s transfer to Manchester City (63.7 million euros) and Fernando Torres to Chelsea (58.5 million euros).
This summer also recorded several other major sales for Liverpool, including Luis Diaz’s transfer to Bayern Munich for 75 million euros and Gabriel Kownsa’s to Bayer Leverkusen for 35 million euros.
Despite criticism of Liverpool’s large spending this summer, completing Nunez’s deal reduces the net spending to 112.5 million euros, making Liverpool the fourth highest spending club in the English Premier League, behind Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City, and close to clubs like Tottenham, Sunderland, and Chelsea.
Philippe Coutinho, Barcelona, 135 million euros.
Luis Suarez, Barcelona, 82.7 million euros.
Luis Diaz, Bayern Munich, 70 million euros.
Raheem Sterling, Manchester City, 63.7 million euros.
Fabinho, Al-Ittihad, 46.7 million euros.
Gabriel Kownsa, Bayer Leverkusen, 35 million euros.
Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid, 34.5 million euros.
Sadio Mane, Bayern Munich, 32 million euros.
