The Benin national team aims to achieve the dream of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in its history when it visits Nigeria at 7 PM today, Tuesday, in the final round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time ever.
Benin leads Group 3 standings with 17 points, ahead of Nigeria in third place by three points, while South Africa holds second place with 15 points. Rwanda is out of contention with 11 points, Lesotho has 9 points, and Zimbabwe sits last in sixth place with 5 points.
Benin seeks victory to fulfill its dream of reaching the World Cup, while Nigeria hopes to leverage home advantage to secure three points and wait for South Africa to slip against Rwanda, who play simultaneously.
Notably, if Nigeria beats Benin 2-1—the same score Benin won by in the first leg—the two teams will be tied at 17 points, equal in goals scored, goals conceded, goal difference, and head-to-head results.
In that case, fair play rules will be used to determine the qualifier from the Nigeria-Benin match if South Africa falters against Rwanda. If the teams are also equal in yellow/red cards, a random draw will be the final solution to decide the direct qualifier from Group 3 to the World Cup.
