President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a decision appointing writer, novelist, and screenwriter Ahmed Mourad as a member of the Egyptian Senate, among the list of members appointed by presidential decree.
Ahmed Mourad is a prominent name in Egypt’s literary and cinematic scenes. His books top bestseller lists, and the films he writes for cinema are among the most popular. His latest novel, “Bat’s Well,” was published in 2020 by Dar El Shorouk. Before that, he released his sixth novel, “Deer Hunting Season,” in 2017, the same year he received the Egyptian State Award for Excellence in Literature.
In 2016, he published “Land of the God,” set in ancient Egypt, following a secret cleverly hidden within the lines of the most sacred books of Egyptian civilization. In 2014, his fourth novel “1919” was released, skillfully immersing readers in the fiery 1919 revolution, later adapted into the successful and popular film “Kira and the Jinn.” In 2012, he presented his third novel “The Blue Elephant,” which was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (the Booker Prize). Prior to that, his novel “Diamond Dust” (2010) topped bestseller lists for a long period.
Mourad’s literary journey began in 2007 with his first novel “Vertigo,” a thrilling work that achieved huge success, with dozens of editions published. It won the Mediterranean Cultural Prize from Italy in 2013 and was adapted into a TV series aired in 2012.
Ahmed Mourad, considered one of the distinguished screenwriters, has contributed to several important films, the latest being the 2022 popular film “Kira and the Jinn,” a historical movie directed by Marwan Hamed, written by Ahmed Mourad, produced by Synergy Art Production, starring Karim Abdel Aziz, Ahmed Ezz, Hend Sabry, Said Ragab, Ahmed Malik, and Huda El Mufti.
His novel “The Blue Elephant” was adapted into a successful film in 2014, followed by the cinema-specific film “The Originals” in 2017. The novel “Diamond Dust” was also adapted into a successful feature film in 2018. Mourad then directly presented the second part of “The Blue Elephant” film in 2019, which was highly impressive and set box office records. He later authored the book “Killing for Beginners,” published by Dar El Shorouk in 2022, the same year he won six awards at the Egyptian Cinema Competition organized by the Egyptian Association of Cinema Writers and Critics. Mourad studied at the Higher Institute of Cinema and graduated from the Cinematography Department in 2001, which naturally led him to pursue cinema alongside his literary career.
