France’s football captain Kylian Mbappé suffered a new injury to his right ankle during the match against Azerbaijan the day before yesterday in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and he will miss the “Blues” trip to Iceland, according to the national team’s technical staff.

Mbappé had previously suffered a right ankle injury with his club Real Madrid, and he received two hits during the 3-0 win over Azerbaijan, a match in which he scored the opening goal before being substituted before the end.

His absence adds to a long list of forwards missing from the October training camp for the qualifiers, including Ousmane Dembélé, last season’s best player in the world, Désiré Doué, Marcus Thuram, and Bradley Barcola.

The French Football Federation stated, “Kylian Mbappé will not be able to play against Iceland.”

Upon his return to the Clairefontaine training center, “the French captain spoke with coach Didier Deschamps,” who “officially announced his absence.”

The French Federation clarified that Mbappé “returned to be at his team’s disposal and will not be replaced by another player.”

The French star had rested during training last week.

Mbappé scored the first goal from an individual effort (45+2), before receiving the first hit on his injured ankle following a tackle by Rustam Ahmadzadeh, who received a yellow card (52).

He then suffered a new hit to the same ankle from Abdullah Kheiblaev at the end of the match, leading to his substitution by Florian Thauvin (82).

Deschamps said after the match, “His ankle is sensitive, and he received a hit in the same spot, so he preferred to leave because the pain was severe.”
