André Villas-Boas, president of FC Porto, proposed the creation of an “Iberian Super Cup” tournament bringing together clubs from Spain and Portugal, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, alongside Porto, Benfica, and Sporting Lisbon.
Villas-Boas explained during the Portuguese Football Summit in Oeiras that the initiative aims to internationalize Portuguese football, mentioning the possibility of moving some league matches abroad to attract fans in cities like Paris and New York.
He confirmed that he discussed the idea with presidents of Spanish and Portuguese clubs despite opposition from UEFA. He added that the experiment could open the door to increased fan engagement for the domestic leagues in Spain and Portugal.
