Stamford Bridge stadium will host at 10 PM today Tuesday the highly anticipated match between English club Chelsea and Portuguese side Benfica, as part of the second round of the group stage in the UEFA Champions League.
The Chelsea vs Benfica match recalls their historic encounter in the Round of 16 at the recent FIFA Club World Cup held in the USA, which lasted 4 and a half hours due to bad weather conditions and ended with Chelsea winning 4-1 after extra time.
Benfica marks its first European appearance under the experienced coach José Mourinho, who recently took over the team following the departure of Bruno Lage due to poor results.
José Mourinho, returning to Stamford Bridge where he previously managed Chelsea twice, may have played a role in the dismissal of Italian coach Enzo Maresca from Chelsea, who has not tasted victory in the last three Premier League matches.
Chelsea drew 2-2 with Brentford, lost 1-2 to Manchester United, and failed to win for the third consecutive match after losing 1-3 to Brighton. They also lost their Champions League opener 1-3 against Bayern Munich at the Munich Arena.
Mourinho previously managed Chelsea in two periods, from 2004 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2015, leading the club to eight trophies including three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups, and the FA Community Shield. Chelsea currently sits eighth in the Premier League table with 8 points from 6 matches.
