Polish player Iga Swiatek, ranked second worldwide and 2023 champion, reached the round of 16 at the Beijing 1000-point tennis tournament without completing her match against Colombian Camila Osorio, who lost the first set 0-6 before withdrawing early in the second due to injury on Monday.

Swiatek, the top seed in the tournament and coming off her third title this season after winning the Seoul tournament, will face 16th seed Spanish player Emma Navarro in the round of 16. Navarro also advanced without completing her match against French player Louise Pasquion, who lost the first set 2-6 and was trailing 0-1 in the second before withdrawing.

The Wimbledon champion this season, raising her major titles tally to six, is seeking her second consecutive 1000-point tournament title after winning Cincinnati against Italian Jasmine Paolini, marking her twelfth title in this category of tournaments.

Young Russian player Mira Andreeva, fourth seed in the tournament and fifth worldwide, also comfortably reached the round of 16 by defeating Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Manero 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 32 minutes.

Andreeva, who reached the quarterfinals last year in only her second appearance at this tournament and won the Dubai and Indian Wells 1000-point titles earlier this season, will next face British player Sonay Kartal, who defeated Australian Maya Guyent 6-3, 6-2.

Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk also qualified for the same round by beating Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 6-2, and will face either fifth seed American Jessica Pegula or 30th seed British Emma Raducanu.

In the men’s 500-point tournament, Italian player Jannik Sinner, ranked second worldwide and 2023 champion and 2024 runner-up, reached the semifinals after showing two different faces against Hungarian Fabian Marozsan. He easily won the first set 6-1 but struggled to take the second 7-5, finishing the match in one hour and 20 minutes.

The Italian, coming off a tough loss in the US Open final against rival Alcaraz which cost him the top ranking to the Spaniard, was close to losing the second set after losing his serve and trailing 4-5.

However, he recovered and won three consecutive games to secure his spot in the semifinals where he will face Australian Alex de Minaur, the third seed who qualified after Czech Jakub Mensik withdrew in the first set while de Minaur was leading 4-1.
