Dr. Jawad Al-Anani, former Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan, confirmed that the recent decision to ban the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan came after careful study and was not a spur-of-the-moment or politically impulsive decision.
He explained, in a phone interview with journalist Raghda Mounir on “Cairo News” channel, that the Jordanian senior leadership, headed by King Abdullah II, was keen to ensure that the recent elections were fair and reflective of the Jordanian people’s wishes. However, the results revealed practices that the state considered serious violations by the Muslim Brotherhood.
Al-Anani added that the electoral process did not achieve the desired goal, as it produced weak leadership and did not truly reflect the citizens’ aspirations, which prompted the King to take a decisive decision to confront what he considered a mistake, in order to preserve the proper democratic path.
He pointed out that true democracy requires giving all parties and currents space to express their views through the ballot boxes, which was not achieved as required.
Al-Anani clarified that Jordan faces complex internal and external challenges, which require the political leadership to take clear and firm decisions to prevent any attempts to confuse matters or exploit democracy in ways harmful to stability.
He confirmed that what is needed is to invest in the energies of youth and their desire for renewal, contributing to creating a safe climate and positive interaction between the people and their leadership.
