According to details, the agency reported quoting an official that Jed Royal, the top official for the Indo-Pacific region at the US Department of Defense, met with a senior Taiwanese national security official in Anchorage.

Reuters noted that the United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations.

It pointed out that China regularly describes Taiwan as the most important and sensitive issue in its relations with the United States.

The agency reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the world faces a choice between peace or war during a massive military parade in Beijing on Wednesday.

In late July, the Financial Times reported that the US canceled a meeting scheduled for June with Taiwan’s defense minister, raising growing concerns in Taipei that Washington fears angering China.

Wellington Koo was scheduled to visit the Washington area for defense talks with Elbridge Colby, the third-highest official at the US Department of Defense (Pentagon), but the US canceled the meeting at the last moment, according to several people familiar with the matter.

Washington told Taiwan the timing was inappropriate due to US strikes against Iran, but some sources indicated other motives.

Several US officials expressed concern that allowing the Taiwanese defense minister’s visit could undermine US-China trade negotiations and hinder President Donald Trump’s efforts to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The US and Taiwan are still seeking a new date for the meeting, but insiders indicated Washington prefers to hold the meeting at a level lower than Defense Minister Koo, increasing concerns in Taipei about Trump’s desire to avoid provoking Beijing.

The cancellation came after a call between Trump and Xi, sparking speculation that the US president may have succumbed to Chinese pressure.

Allowing Koo’s visit would have signaled Washington’s readiness to ignore Chinese pressure, especially since Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan.

According to unwritten rules, the US has never allowed the Taiwanese defense minister to visit the Washington area since it shifted diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
