The summer 2025 transfer market witnessed an unprecedented historic surge, with five new deals entering the list of the 50 most expensive transfers in football history, reflecting the continued dominance of the English Premier League on the global scene.
Liverpool stood out notably, completing three major signings, two of which exceeded the 100 million euro mark: Swedish Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, and German Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, making the “Reds” the highest-spending club in a single transfer window, surpassing the previous record held by Chelsea.
Swedish striker Alexander Isak made headlines after his move to Liverpool for 144 million euros from Newcastle, becoming the fourth most expensive player in the history of the game.
Isak had joined Newcastle in the summer of 2022 for 77.5 million euros from Real Sociedad, after scoring 62 goals in 109 matches with the Magpies.
German Florian Wirtz also entered the list of the ten most expensive transfers in history after joining Liverpool for 125 million euros, with the possibility of the value rising to 140 million euros through bonuses and incentives. Wirtz’s transfer was the highlight of summer 2025 until Isak’s deal surpassed it on the last day of the “mercato”.
Despite these huge deals, Brazilian Neymar still holds the title of the most expensive transfer in football history, after moving from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for 222 million euros in summer 2017. He is followed by French Kylian Mbappé, who transferred to the same club for 180 million euros.
