The Egyptian Football Association commemorated the death anniversary of the late Mahmoud El-Gohary, the former head coach of the national team.

The Egyptian Football Association posted on its official Facebook account a picture of the late Mahmoud El-Gohary, labeled ‘The General,’ with the caption: “September 3rd.. the anniversary of Captain Mahmoud El-Gohary’s passing. May God have mercy on him.”

General El-Gohary passed away on September 3, 2012, at the age of 74.

El-Gohary coached Al Ahly club in the early 1980s and succeeded in winning Al Ahly’s first African title, the African Champions League, in 1982. He then took over as coach of the Egyptian national team in September 1988.

He led Egypt to the 1990 FIFA World Cup for the second time in its history after the first time in 1934. Under his leadership, Egypt won the African Cup of Nations in 1998. He was the first coach to win the African Cup of Nations both as a player and as a coach, having won the cup with Egypt in 1957 and 1959, where he was also the tournament’s top scorer.
