The transfer of Marc Guéhi to Liverpool collapsed on the final day of the summer transfer window after Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace’s coach, threatened to resign if his team captain was sold.
The Guardian reported that Glasner’s “anger” and resignation threat led to Guéhi staying at Crystal Palace and not joining the “Reds.”
The English international player had completed part of his medical after an agreement on a £35 million fee between the clubs, and personal terms were agreed on a five-year contract until 2030, but Glasner confirmed that Guéhi would remain a Crystal Palace player.
The newspaper wrote, “Glasner appeared very unhappy with the decision to accept Liverpool’s offer and reiterated his plea not to sell his captain on the last day of the transfer window during heated talks with club chairman Steve Parish last Monday.”
It added, “There were also concerns that the Austrian coach, who led Palace to their first-ever trophy when they won the FA Cup last May, might resign after stating that they must keep Guéhi if they want to have a successful season.”
Ultimately, Glasner succeeded in convincing Parish to cancel the deal despite admitting after Crystal Palace’s Community Shield win over Erling Haaland’s team that they might have to sell the 25-year-old player this month to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Crystal Palace had rejected a £70 million offer from Tottenham to sign the English international in January, citing the player’s desire to join the Premier League champions and his refusal to sign a new contract.
