A court in California cleared American rapper Cardi B on Tuesday evening after a security guard filed a civil lawsuit accusing her of assault and demanding millions in damages.
The artist thanked her supporters as she left the courtroom in Alhambra near Los Angeles, saying, “I swear to God, I’ll say this on my deathbed: I did not touch that woman. I did not lay my hands on that girl.”
The security guard, Imani Ellis, sought $24 million in compensation from the singer of the hits “Money” and “Bodak Yellow” for an alleged assault that took place in February 2018.
The plaintiff, who worked at a women’s health clinic in Beverly Hills, accused Cardi B of spitting on her and scratching her face with long nails.
However, during the trial, the artist stated that the security guard acted violently towards her, attempting to film her with a phone during a medical examination while she was pregnant, a fact not publicly known at the time.
Cardi B’s defense lawyers explained that Imani Ellis tried to intimidate the singer, which led to a heated altercation involving verbal insults before medical staff intervened.
The civil court that heard the case acquitted the 32-year-old Grammy-winning artist.
As she left the courtroom, Cardi B said, “Anyone who tries to file a frivolous lawsuit against me, I will fight back and make them pay because this is unacceptable.”
She added, “No one should ever think they can sue me and that I will settle and give them money.”
