Paramount Studios announced Tuesday that it will produce an action movie based on the popular combat video game series “Call of Duty.”
Following Sky Dance’s acquisition last month of the studio that produced “Top Gun” and “The Godfather,” now managed by David Ellison, son of billionaire Larry Ellison, founder of the tech giant Oracle, Ellison has embarked on a broad plan to revitalize the company.
The plan includes producing a movie adapted from the world of “Call of Duty,” which has 100 million monthly players.
David Ellison announced the deal with Activision-Blizzard, the game’s developer, describing the production of a “Call of Duty” movie as a “dream come true” for him, being a longtime fan of the game.
He added that adapting the “unique narrative world” of the “Call of Duty” series to the big screen is both an “honor and a responsibility.”
Since its launch in 2003, more than 30 versions of the game have been released, with the series selling over 500 million copies.
The story of the latest game, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” released in 2024, is set in the 1990s and revolves around a security team tasked with targeting a senator and reaching a highly secretive location in Washington.
According to the statement, the agreement with Activision states that Paramount will be responsible for “developing, producing, and distributing a feature film inspired by the game.”
Financial details and the movie plot have not been disclosed.
Variety magazine cited unnamed sources saying the partnership may include other movies and TV series inspired by the video game.
Paramount previously adapted another famous video game, “Sonic the Hedgehog,” into a feature film.
Hollywood studios have often struggled with disappointing revenues from video game-based movies, but the trend has reversed in recent years, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” earning over $1.3 billion and “A Minecraft Movie” earning about $1 billion.
