Spanish goalkeeper David Raya blamed the new ball for the goal he conceded against Liverpool in the Premier League’s third round clash.
Arsenal lost 0-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, with the “Gunners” conceding a rocket shot from Hungarian Dominic Soboslai from 30 yards out, which Raya was unable to handle, just 7 minutes before full time.
Raya, 29, expressed his frustration with the new ball produced by the famous brand Puma, which is being used in the Premier League matches for the first time this season, after years of playing with Nike balls.
Puma became the official new supplier of the Premier League football after Nike’s 25-year contract ended last season. Goalkeepers view the new ball as “unloved.”
Raya told the British newspaper The Sun, “The new ball is completely different from the Nike ball, and we have to adapt to it.”
The Spanish international explained, “The way you handle and catch it is different, even the shooting is different, especially regarding its speed and movement in the air, which makes judging it difficult.”
He added, “I’m frustrated that I couldn’t stop it from going into the net like any other goal. It was an amazing shot, I remember the ball moved a lot and slipped away from me. I hope to save the next attempt.”
Raya concluded, “We played for many years with the Nike ball, and now we have to adapt to the new reality imposed on everyone.”
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta recently criticized the new ball, which was tested last season in the English Football League Cup.
Arteta said after Arsenal’s 0-2 loss to Newcastle United in January, “It’s completely different from the usual Premier League ball.”
The Spanish coach added, “The ball flies differently and handling it is also different. We have to adapt to it.”
It is worth noting that Soboslai’s goal was the first goal Raya conceded this Premier League season, having kept clean sheets in the first two matches where Arsenal won 1-0 against Manchester United and 5-0 against Leeds United.
Liverpool, the defending champions, topped the Premier League with a perfect record of 9 points from 3 matches, while Arsenal dropped to third place with 6 points, one point behind their neighbor Chelsea who rose to second place with 7 points.
