Last year’s runner-up secured the match with complete ease.

American Jessica Pegula, ranked fourth in the world, reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, the last of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, by defeating her compatriot Ann Li 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday.

Last year’s runner-up sealed the match comfortably in just 55 minutes.

Pegula dominated the first set, winning all four of her opponent’s service games in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th games, conceding only one break in the 4th game, to take the set 6-1 in just 25 minutes.

She followed the same pattern in the second set, breaking the 58th-ranked player’s serve in the 4th game at 3-1 and again in the 8th game to close it out 6-2.

Pegula will face the winner between Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the 2021 Roland Garros and 2024 Wimbledon champion, and fellow American Taylor Townsend in the quarterfinals.

Speaking about her upcoming opponent, who she played against at Roland Garros this year in two tough sets, Pegula said, “When she improves her serve, she becomes really dangerous. But I felt she started the match slowly and nervously, so I wanted to take advantage of that.”

Referring to her recent poor form that led to early exits on hard courts in Washington, Montreal, and Cincinnati, she added, “Reaching the second week of the tournament was not a goal because I wasn’t playing well.”
