The Assistant Commissioner for Food Security, Mr. Lemam Ould Abdaw, accompanied by the Governor of Gorgol, Mr. Mohamed Mokhtar Ould Abdi, visited the administrative center of Tifondsefe yesterday, Saturday, to assess the situation of citizens affected by the river flood and the government measures taken to assist them.
The visit included the shelter camp hosting about 900 affected families, where the Food Security Commission provided aid consisting of 900 shelter units equipped with mattresses and blankets, and 900 food baskets containing rice, sugar, and cooking oil. Additionally, the commission managed the evacuation and relocation of citizens from affected areas and ensured drinking water supply inside the camp.
The Assistant Commissioner and the Governor chaired two separate meetings: one with the camp residents and another with the regional emergency committee, dedicated to evaluating the current situation and monitoring the implementation of the intervention plan to support the affected.
In his speech, the Assistant Commissioner stated that this intervention comes in implementation of the directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and under the supervision of the government led by Prime Minister Mr. Mokhtar Ould Daddah, noting that all relevant sectors are mobilized for rapid intervention whenever needed, and that the commission remains fully ready to accompany the situation.
He added that the commission provided food aid to an additional 600 families affected by rains in other areas of the region, bringing the total number of beneficiary families to 1500, supplied with nearly 100 tons of foodstuffs and 900 equipped shelter units.
Several affected citizens expressed their thanks and gratitude to His Excellency the President and the government, appreciating the care and attention they received, which positively impacted their living conditions.
The Assistant Commissioner was accompanied on this visit by the President of the Gorgol region, Mr. Ba Amadou Aboua, the governors of the Kéïdhi and Magta-Lahjar districts, the head of the Tifondsefe administrative center, the mayor, as well as administrative and security authorities of the region and a delegation from the Food Security Commission.
