As the pregnancy journey nears its end, many women become confused about certain symptoms and wonder, “Does this feeling mean that labor has started?” There are specific signs that can help distinguish between normal late-pregnancy symptoms and true signs of labor onset. According to a report published on Allina Health, the bodily changes preparing for birth may begin gradually or appear suddenly and vary from woman to woman. The clearest sign is repeated and increasingly strong contractions. These contractions usually start with wide intervals and then gradually become closer and more intense. If you notice that contractions do not subside with position changes or rest, you may indeed be in early labor. In some cases, the amniotic sac surrounding the fetus ruptures, leading to the release of warm fluid from the vagina.
This is known as “water breaking,” and when it occurs, it is recommended to contact your doctor even if contractions have not started, as labor may begin within hours. The appearance of sticky discharge tinged pink or red is common in early labor stages. This “bloody show” results from the beginning of cervical dilation in preparation for birth. Some women feel mild lower back pain or discomfort similar to menstrual cramps, which may extend to the thighs. These pains, along with discomfort or digestive disturbances, may be early indicators of labor onset. Interestingly, some pregnant women experience a strong burst of energy or a desire to clean and organize the home. This “nesting energy” is common in the last days or hours before birth and is a natural signal from the body preparing to welcome the newborn.
If you notice any of these signs, especially close contractions or fluid leakage, it is best to contact your healthcare provider. Psychological and physical readiness at this stage can make the birth experience safer and calmer.
