A wife sued her husband for unpaid expenses over 3 years and school fees before the Family Court in October, demanding 2.4 million EGP after he failed to pay for her and their children. She stated, “My husband abandoned me and left me after 18 years of marriage, refusing to pay for his children for 3 years.”
She added, “He seized my belongings and jewelry. I demanded expenses and legal rights after he committed fraud, deception, and stole my money, refusing to resolve disputes, which led me to request a divorce due to harm after being threatened by him, living in torment because of his behavior, stubbornness, and declared desire to take revenge on me.”
The husband responded to his wife’s accusations, calling them malicious: “My wife abandoned me, defamed me, refused to return, and continued to cause problems, which led me to file cases to prove her disobedience and reclaim my rights after she received expenses exceeding 100,000 EGP monthly, in addition to imprisonment and embezzlement lawsuits she filed against me.”
According to personal status law, the harm justifying divorce must be caused by the husband to the wife. It is not necessary for the harm to be repeated; a single occurrence is sufficient for the wife to request divorce. Divorce due to harm is permitted in cases of discord, bad treatment, abandonment, and anything involving the husband’s fault.
