The Israeli occupation is attempting to impose its conditions and instructions regarding the Palestinian prisoners scheduled for release under the Gaza ceasefire agreement, as confirmed by Palestinian factions.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Palestine, Guevara Al-Badiri, cited a Palestinian source familiar with the negotiations saying that Hamas is still communicating with the US administration through intermediaries Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to amend the list published by the Israeli Ministry of Justice.
According to the Palestinian source, Hamas wants to clarify Israel’s manipulation of the list that includes 250 prisoners who were supposed to all be serving life sentences and have spent many years in Israeli prisons. Guevara said the list revealed by Israel includes 195 prisoners with life sentences, while the rest are either prisoners who have not served long sentences or have not yet been tried.
The Israeli Walla website quoted sources described as informed that the final list of Palestinian security prisoners includes 195 prisoners sentenced to life, adding that the internal security service (Shabak) vetoed about 100 names and excluded 25 prominent leaders.
The Israeli manipulation, the Al Jazeera correspondent adds, has angered Hamas and Palestinian factions, noting that the official Palestinian list of prisoners to be released has not yet been published.
While Israel prepares to receive its prisoners after their release, it prevents Palestinians from preparing or celebrating. Guevara noted no exceptional measures or movements were observed in front of Ofer prison west of Ramallah, pointing out that Israeli occupation forces prevent and threaten families in the West Bank from organizing any reception for the freed prisoners.
The occupation also prohibits Palestinians from gathering, raising flags, communicating with media, or publishing on social media.
The Al Jazeera correspondent confirms that the occupation prevented some families of Palestinian prisoners who will be deported outside Palestine from traveling through the Karama crossing and the border with Jordan.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prisoners Media Office (non-governmental) announced that occupation forces launched a wide campaign of raids and arrests in the West Bank early Sunday, targeting homes of prisoners expected to be released amid threats to their families.
In this context, a video circulated in Israeli media showed Israeli security personnel mistreating Palestinian prisoners being gathered in the Negev prison (south) in preparation for their release.
It is noted that the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth previously reported that the Israeli Prison Service received orders to release Palestinian security prisoners as part of the exchange deal, and clarified that the authorities began transferring security prisoners from five Israeli prisons to the facilities designated for their release.
The exchange deal includes the release of about 250 prisoners sentenced to life and about 1,700 prisoners from Gaza who were detained after October 7, 2023.
