Erling Haaland emphasized that Manchester City must show more strength to end their poor run of results in the UEFA Champions League after twice losing their lead in a 2-2 draw with Monaco due to “naivety” in the second half, according to him.
Haaland scored both visitors’ goals at the Louis II Stadium, bringing his tally this season to 17 goals in just 10 matches for his club and country.
Monaco equalized thanks to a brilliant goal from Jordan Tchimi, and Eric Dier secured the point for the French league team with a late penalty kick.
Haaland told BBC: “I’m angry and I think everyone should be. This is not good enough.”
Manchester City have now gone a year since their last away win in Europe, although the point they earned at least ended a run of four consecutive away defeats in the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s men were knocked out in the round of 16 last season for the first time since the 2012-2013 season.
Haaland expressed frustration at his team’s approach, which tried to hold on to their narrow lead in the second half at Monaco instead of pushing to finish the match: “Of course, I am not satisfied, we didn’t win, we did naive things in the second half and I don’t think we played well enough. We don’t deserve to win. We need more energy. We need to press them more like we did in the first half and control the game better.”
Manchester City currently sit eighth in the Champions League group standings with four points from their opening two matches.
Guardiola’s men face a tough phase in Europe before the end of 2025 with trips to Villarreal and Real Madrid, while German teams Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund visit the Etihad Stadium.
