On Thursday, Russia condemned the security guarantees demanded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of any settlement of the conflict in his country, considering them “a danger to the European continent.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters at an economic conference in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East that Moscow considers these demands “completely unacceptable,” adding, “These are not security guarantees for Ukraine, but guarantees of danger to the European continent.”
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Wednesday that security guarantees for Ukraine are ready and will be adopted by the “coalition of the willing,” supporters of Kyiv, on Thursday.
He added, “We, as European countries, are ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine and its people on the day a peace agreement is signed… the preparatory work is finished.”
Macron hosted his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky at the Élysée Palace in Paris on the eve of the meeting of leaders of the coalition of the willing supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Separately, U.S. President Donald Trump said he intends to speak with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the coming days regarding ending the war in Ukraine.
