A court document published Monday revealed that YouTube agreed to pay $22 million to settle a lawsuit filed against it by former President Donald Trump after the Google-owned platform suspended his account following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack by his supporters.
This makes the online video-sharing site the latest platform to reach a settlement with Trump in a legal dispute that began in July 2021, following similar agreements with Meta and X (formerly Twitter).
After the attack on the legislative headquarters in Washington, major social media platforms deleted Trump’s accounts fearing he might use them to promote further violence through his false claims that election fraud caused him to lose the 2020 election to former President Joe Biden.
Following this action, the 79-year-old Republican sued these platforms, alleging they unlawfully censored him.
According to the court document, the $22 million settlement YouTube will pay is designated for a project Trump intends to build at the White House through a nonprofit organization called “Trust for the National Mall,” which is “dedicated to restoring, preserving, and enhancing the National Mall, and supporting the construction of the official White House ceremonial hall.”
In February, X reached a settlement with Trump for about $10 million after the billionaire Republican filed a lawsuit against the company and its former CEO Jack Dorsey.
In January, days after his inauguration, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed against it by the former president. The settlement stipulated allocating $22 million of the amount to fund Trump’s future presidential library.
YouTube’s parent company, Alphabet, announced that the platform’s advertising revenue alone exceeded $36 billion in 2024, according to its 2025 annual report submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
