Egyptian star Mohamed Salah is on the verge of a historic milestone in his football career, as he prepares to play his 100th match in the UEFA Champions League when his team Liverpool faces Turkish side Galatasaray on Tuesday evening at Rams Park, during the second stage of the continental competition. This achievement is eagerly awaited by fans of Egyptian, Arab, and European football alike, due to its symbolic value reflecting Salah’s impact on the strongest club competition.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) stated on its official website that the Istanbul match will mark a significant milestone in Salah’s European journey, which began over a decade ago with Swiss club Basel, before his talent blossomed at Italian club Roma, and then reached its peak with Liverpool, with whom he won the title in 2019.
Today, the “Egyptian King” stands just one step away from a historic century that only a few players who left their mark on European football have achieved.
So far, Salah has played 99 Champions League matches, the latest against Atletico Madrid in the first stage, where he shined by scoring a goal and assisting another to lead Liverpool to an exciting 3-2 victory. With this performance, he raised his scoring tally to 52 goals in the competition (48 in the main rounds and 4 in qualifiers), surpassing Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and standing alone in 10th place on the competition’s all-time top scorers list.
The Egyptian star is tied with 48 goals in the main rounds with two giants of the game, Swedish Zlatan Ibrahimović and Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko, confirming his place among the top ten scorers in the history of the tournament. With his continued brilliance and high-level performances, his chances to climb higher in the scorers’ ranking in the coming seasons look strong.
