Sheikh Mohamed Kamal, the Fatwa Secretary at the Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta, answered a question from a citizen in Beheira Governorate regarding the ruling on the stepmother’s daughter appearing without a hijab before her mother’s husband.
He explained during the program “Fatawa Al-Nas” aired on Al-Nas channel on Tuesday that the stepmother’s daughter is legally called a “stepdaughter” (rabiba), and she becomes permanently forbidden (mahram) to the mother’s husband once the marriage contract is concluded and consummated.
He added: “Consummation with the mother forbids the daughters, and the contract with the daughters forbids the mothers,” citing the Quranic verse: ﴿And [also prohibited to you are] the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins, and that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously, except for what has already occurred. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.﴾, clarifying that this prohibition is permanent whether the marriage continues or ends by divorce or death.
Sheikh Mohamed Kamal confirmed that based on this, the stepdaughter may sit in front of her mother’s husband without a hijab, provided there is no temptation, as she is considered a mahram.
