Today, Sunday, the “Global Steadfastness Fleet” sets sail from the city of Barcelona carrying humanitarian aid and activists in an attempt to break the illegal blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip.

The fleet, consisting of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Gaza Movement, the Steadfastness Convoy, and the Malaysian Nusantara Steadfastness Organization, finalized preparations to sail dozens of ships to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

The fleet includes activists from 44 countries, European parliamentarians, and prominent figures including former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau and Portuguese left-wing MP Mariana Mortágua, according to Agence France-Presse.

It is planned to depart from Spain today, Sunday, and from Tunisia and other countries on September 4, alongside demonstrations in several countries, according to Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, a member of the steering committee of the “Global Steadfastness Fleet.”

The ships will leave the Catalan port to open a humanitarian corridor and put an end to the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people, according to the organizers of this initiative.

The committee called on people worldwide to support the fleet, which they said is an extension and inspiration from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s efforts since 2010, starting with the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara, through successive attempts to break the blockade, up to the 2025 blockade-breaking waves represented so far by the ships Al-Damir, Madeline, and Hanzala, which were intercepted by Israel.

Activists participating in the fleet called on governments to pressure Israel to allow their fleet, the largest so far, to break the Gaza blockade.

Spokesperson for the “Global Steadfastness Fleet,” Saif Abu Kashk, emphasized that the initiative will work tirelessly until the blockade on the Gaza Strip is broken and the genocide stopped.

Abu Kashk expressed great frustration at the inaction of governments to stop the massacres and famine in Gaza, saying they “take no action to prevent genocide; they do nothing.”

He confirmed that in protest against the silence of governments, initiatives like the Global Steadfastness Fleet are emerging worldwide to seek an end to the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Regarding the challenges and risks they may face on their maritime route to Gaza, Abu Kashk said he is aware that Israel may take violent measures against them, stressing that no potential danger they face can compare to the daily dangers Palestinians face in Gaza.

Thunberg said, “Such a mission should not have been necessary,” explaining that “It is the responsibility of our governments and elected officials to work and strive to uphold international law, prevent war crimes, and stop genocide,” but they “fail to do so, thereby betraying Palestinians and all humanity.”

Since March 2, Israel has closed all crossings leading to Gaza, preventing any humanitarian aid, plunging the Strip into famine despite the accumulation of relief trucks at its borders.

However, it allowed very limited amounts of aid to enter weeks ago, insufficient to meet the minimum needs of the starving, while famine continues as most trucks are looted by gangs protected by Israel, according to Gaza’s government media office.
