Liverpool secured an exciting 3-2 victory over Newcastle United in the second round of the English Premier League on Monday evening. Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring for the Reds in the 35th minute with a powerful ground shot from outside the box that found the right corner of Newcastle’s goal. Newcastle suffered a blow in the 3rd minute of added time in the first half (45+3) when their player Anthony Gordon was sent off for a violent tackle on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. Early in the second half, Liverpool extended their lead with a second goal by Frenchman Hugo Ekitike, who scored with a ground shot from inside the area. Newcastle managed to reduce the deficit in the 57th minute when Brazilian Bruno Guimarães headed in a precise cross from the right side.
Newcastle continued to press and William Osula equalized by exploiting Liverpool’s defensive mispositioning, rounding goalkeeper Alisson Becker to score. However, the home team’s joy was short-lived as substitute Ryo Ngoumoha snatched the winning goal for Liverpool in the 100th minute, taking advantage of defensive confusion to find himself unmarked inside the box. With this win, Liverpool raised their points to 6, occupying third place in the standings, behind Arsenal and Tottenham on goal difference, while Newcastle remained with one point in 15th place.
