From the announcement of Isak joining Liverpool (X)

English club Liverpool dominated the summer transfer window with unprecedented spending, successfully strengthening the squad of Dutch manager Arne Slot with a series of record deals, most notably the duo: Swedish Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, and German Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, making the club the biggest spender in a single transfer window in Premier League history.

Liverpool spent £446 million during the summer transfer window, surpassing the previous record held by Chelsea (£434.5 million in summer 2023). This massive spending reflects the club management’s clear intention to build a team capable of dominating domestically and in Europe.

Liverpool completed several notable deals, including: Alexander Isak: a record deal worth £125 million, higher than the total spent by 10 Premier League clubs combined during the same period.

Florian Wirtz: a deal worth £100 million, with additional variables up to £16.5 million, Hugo Ekitike: joined from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million.

The club also signed other players including: Milos Kerkez (£40 million), Jeremy Frimpong (£29.5 million), Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29 million). An additional deal to sign Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace for £35 million collapsed at the last moment.

Some may wonder: how was Liverpool able to spend such an amount despite the strict profit and sustainability rules imposed by the Premier League?

The answer lies simply in two main factors: huge revenues and tight financial planning, as Liverpool’s total revenues in the latest financial report reached £614 million.

The club also recently signed a huge sponsorship deal with Adidas, estimated at £60 million annually for 10 years, alongside the expansion of Anfield stadium which increased capacity, thus boosting ticket and hospitality revenues, in addition to regular participation in the Champions League and competing for domestic trophies which enhanced prize money.

Despite the massive spending by the Premier League champions during the summer window, Liverpool’s net spend this summer was £218.4 million, less than Arsenal’s £257 million.

Liverpool’s management succeeded in generating strong revenues from selling players at high prices such as: Luis Diaz (£65 million), Darwin Nunez (£56.6 million), Gari Kwansah (£35 million), Ben Doak (£25 million), Caoimhin Kelleher (£18 million), and Tyler Morton (£15 million).

Thus, the club maintained a financial balance that allows maneuvering under the profit and sustainability rules without sacrificing team quality or competitive ambitions.
